How do I know if my car has a ceramic coating?

If you have been sold a ceramic coating, but you are unsure if it has been applied or if it really was a ceramic coating, there are several ways to tell. A real ceramic coating is very hydrophobic and long-lasting. It should still be repelling water years after application. On flat, horizontal surfaces, the water should bead up in a very uniform way and may even form hexagonal patterns.

We have had customers bring cars to us that it was claimed were ceramic coated at the dealership. Although water beaded up and rolled off when the car was collected, six months later the effect was greatly reduced. This would indicate that either a poor quality ceramic coating was applied, or more likely, it was applied improperly.
