This Mazda 3 came to us because the customer found water in the boot and suspected there was a leak at the rear of the car.

One of the first things we did, as part of our leak diagnostic, was check the carpets to see if they were wet. Water always finds its way to the lowest point, so water coming from the back can find its way to the front, but it can also be an indication of other leaks.

Upon testing, we found the cause of the leak in the boot was cracked seams above the boot. This is nothing to worry about - when the car is manufactured it is spot-welded which is fine to hold the car together but isn't waterproof, so a sealer is added. This sealer can crack over time and let water in. We will remove the old sealer and put on new.

As part of our diagnostic, we checked the windscreen which was leaking. The windscreen leak repair was straightforward because there was nothing wrong with the glass, the screen just needed to be removed, cleaned up and refitted with fresh sealant.

The door rubbers were not sealed on and although this didn't seem to be causing any leaks, we recommend sealing to head off future problems.

With all the repairs done, we tested the car on our rain arch. This is when we found a further leak coming from behind the back bumper. We would not have been able to find this until the first leak had been fixed.

There are no surprises here, the door membranes are leaking. On a few cars the inner door membranes are moulded plastic panels, but on the vast majority of cars they are just a sheet of clear plastic held in place with a bead of heavy-duty sealant.

We suspected the rear light was leaking, this is possible if the rubber seal around it has perished.
