Sunroof Leak Repair
Expert sunroof leak repair. We diagnose blocked drains, failed hoses and cracked sunroof trays to find the real cause of leaks before carrying out the correct repair.
If water is dripping from your sunroof or the headlining is damp, the problem is usually in the drainage system or sunroof cassette. We diagnose the cause before repairing it properly.
Sunroof leaking? Water dripping on your head, damp headlining or a mouldy smell?
A leaking sunroof is one of the most obvious car water leaks because customers often notice it straight away - rainwater dripping onto their head, a damp roof lining, wet seats, or a musty smell inside the car.
We have been diagnosing and repairing car water leaks for over 35 years, and sunroof leaks are one of the most common problems we see. The key is finding the real cause before anyone starts guessing, changing parts unnecessarily, or quoting a price that does not match the actual repair needed.
How a sunroof is supposed to work
Most sunroofs are not designed to keep out every drop of water at the glass itself. Instead, the sunroof sits inside a tray called a cassette. Any rainwater that gets past the outer seal is meant to collect in this tray and drain away safely through pipes in each corner.
Those drain pipes usually run down through the body of the car and exit lower down near the wheel arch area. When everything is working properly, the water drains away harmlessly. When something blocks, shrinks, cracks or disconnects, the water ends up inside the vehicle instead.
Common causes of sunroof leaks
1. Blocked sunroof drains
Leaf litter, dirt and debris can collect in the drainage tray at the top, or further down where the drain exits. Some vehicles also have a nylon end piece or 'spider trap' style valve at the bottom which can block up over time.
If this is the problem, the drains can often be cleared and the system returned to normal.
2. Perished, shrunken or disconnected drain hoses
As cars age, the original hoses can shrink, harden or distort. That can cause them to constrict where they bend, pull off their connectors, or stop draining properly. Plastic connectors can also go brittle and break apart.
In these cases, we do not just rely on replacing like-for-like parts. We can make up a complete new set of sunroof drain pipes using better quality hoses and connectors, creating a more durable repair.
3. Cracked sunroof cassette
Sometimes the problem is not the pipes at all. The cassette itself - the tray that catches and directs the water - can crack. When that happens, water escapes from the tray before it ever reaches the drains.
Many dealers will only offer full cassette replacement, which can be very expensive. In many cases, the cassette can be repaired instead.
Why diagnosis comes first
The symptoms of a sunroof leak can look very similar even when the cause is completely different. A blocked drain, a hose that has pulled off, a shattered connector, or a cracked cassette can all lead to the same result - water inside the car.
That is why we inspect and diagnose the problem before quoting for repair. Until we know exactly what has failed, giving a firm price would be guesswork.
Once we have investigated the leak, we can explain what is wrong, what needs to be done, and whether the repair is likely to be a straightforward drain clear-out, replacement pipework, or a more involved cassette repair.
We can also dry the car and deal with mould
Sunroof leaks do not just affect the roof lining. Water can travel into the headlining, pillars, carpets and sound deadening, leaving the car damp long after the rain has stopped.
If your vehicle has taken on a lot of water, we can also help with drying and mould-related contamination as part of a wider car water leak repair process.
What to do if your sunroof is leaking
If you have water dripping from the sunroof area, damp headlining, wet carpets or signs of mould, the best next step is to book an inspection. The sooner the problem is diagnosed, the less chance there is of ongoing interior damage.
Book your sunroof leak inspection
If your sunroof is leaking, do not keep putting towels on the seat and hoping for dry weather. Water can spread through the roof lining, carpets and trim, and the longer it is left, the worse the damage can become.
Book your inspection and let us find the real cause of the leak before the wrong parts are replaced.
We will assess whether the issue is a blocked drain, failed hose, broken connector or cracked cassette, then talk you through the most sensible repair options.
Frequently asked questions
Why is water dripping from my sunroof onto my head?
Usually because the water collecting in the sunroof cassette is no longer draining away properly. The most common causes are blocked drains, shrunken hoses, disconnected pipes or a cracked cassette.
Can a blocked sunroof drain be repaired?
Yes - if the drain is simply blocked with dirt or leaf litter, it can often be cleared. The important thing is checking whether the blockage is the whole problem or whether there is also a damaged hose or connector.
Do you repair cracked sunroof cassettes?
Yes, in some cases a cracked cassette can be repaired. That can be a far more cost-effective option than replacing the whole unit, but it depends on the damage and access required.
Can you quote for sunroof leak repair before inspection?
Not accurately. Sunroof leaks can be caused by several different faults that look the same from inside the car. We need to investigate first so we can identify the real cause and recommend the correct repair.
Do you fix sunroof mechanisms as well?
Not as a general rule. Our service is focused on water leaks and water ingress. We can sometimes help, but we are primarily set up for leak diagnosis, repair, drying and mould-related issues.
