Is Supagard a ceramic coating?

Quick answer: Supagard is not a true ceramic coating - it is a polymer sealant type dealer protection that sits on the surface and does not offer the same hardness or long-term durability as a professionally applied ceramic coating.

Supagard is a polymer coating (polysilazane) which is not a ceramic coating. (At time of writing - there is every chance that they may offer a ceramic coating in the future as other similar companies have done.)

What is Supagard?

Supagard is usually offered by dealerships and is offered as a complete package, including protection for leather, carpets, glass and wheels, which is applied at the dealership when you collect your car.

Supagard are a wonderful company up in Scotland who are very friendly and helpful.  We have done some trouble shooting for them in the past, so we know that they honour their warranty and look after their customers, although you will likely be buying the Supagard package from a dealership rather than dealing with Supagard directly.

Is Supagard any good?

Yes, it is extremely good, and we used it for years. Although, we believe that the formula may have been improved since then. So it may be even better.

It is sold as a 5-year product, but in our experience, it lasts much longer than this, and it does a superb job of protecting your paintwork. Although we steer people towards ceramic coatings these days, we do still recommend polymer coatings, and we still use them.

Furthermore, Supagard make some retail products we highly recommend to anybody, regardless of whether you have had a Supagard package applied at the dealership. Their products for neutralizing bird droppings are very good.

I was told Supagard is ceramic?

Supagard is sold all over the world, and it appears that some outlets in the Far East are selling it as a ceramic coating. We will be charitable and assume that these are small companies being a bit overzealous with their marketing efforts.

Supagard is one of the oldest and respected names in the UK car industry, and as a result of being so well known and sought after,  their branding has been used by counterfeiters and scammers in the past. Only buy from approved Supagard outlets or directly from the Supagard website.

What you should ask next

So - is Supagard a ceramic coating?

No. It’s typically a polymer-based paint protection system rather than a true professional ceramic coating.

What is Supagard, then?

It’s a branded paint protection package (often sold by dealers) that aims to make washing easier and add short-to-medium term protection, usually by using polymer sealants and related products.

How long does Supagard protection last in real life?

It depends on maintenance, mileage and storage, but in our experience it lives up to its 5-year warranty.

Is Supagard any good?

It can be useful if you want something simple and dealer-fitted. The main risk is expectations - it won’t be a “set and forget” multi-year coating, and it won’t stop chips or scratches.

Can I put a ceramic coating over Supagard later?

Yes, but proper prep matters. To get reliable bonding, you typically need thorough decontamination and usually some polishing - which will reduce or remove the existing protection on the areas you work.

What should I ask if a dealer is selling me Supagard?

Ask what exact products are being applied, what preparation is included, what the warranty really covers (and what it doesn’t), what maintenance is required, and whether inspections or top-ups are needed to keep the warranty valid.
