Do I need to recolour my cabriolet roof?

Quick answer: Usually no. It’s rare to need to recolour a cabriolet roof — they tend to wear out before they fade that badly. First, clean the roof properly and re-weatherproof it; this alone makes a big difference. If you’re still not happy, you’re unlikely to like recolouring either — a replacement hood is usually the better option.

If you are looking at your hood, and it's dull, covered in green patches, appears faded, and you have browsed the internet for answers, it is easy to come to the conclusion that you can "re-dye" the hood to bring back the colour... after all, they make these products, that must be the answer, right?

But it is very rare to need to recolour a cabriolet roof. A roof will usually wear out long before it has faded that badly. We generally only recolour canvas hoods on vintage cars. We don't believe that recolouring products work on modern cars.

Cleaning the roof properly and then weatherproofing it will be a huge improvement on any roof, and we suggest you do that first before considering recolouring. If you are not happy with the results, it is unlikely you will be happy with the results of recolouring, and a replacement hood is probably the best option.
