Why is my convertible roof green?
Quick answer: It’s dirt and damp. Dust and organic matter lodge in the fabric and act like soil; once the hydrophobic coating wears off, the hood stays wet and, with sun, becomes ideal for algae, moss and lichen. Deep-clean the roof and re-proof it to stop regrowth.
Your soft top convertible roof has gone green because it has become the perfect environment for algae, moss and lichen to grow. It is its own little ecosystem.
Dirt from the atmosphere settles in the fibres of the roof, it contains all the macro and micro nutrients required to be the perfect soil for growth. Then just add water. If the hydrophobic coating has worn off, your hood remains soggy, and the combination of water and sunshine means you have created a garden on your roof. Fibres of a fabric hood are perfect for the algae and lichen to root into. You might even find carpet moss growing... on occasions we have even seen grass growing out of the seams of a hood.
It hasn't ruined your roof, and it can be cleaned off. Keeping your car clean and maintaining the weatherproof coating will prevent it from growing back.
