How do I get my convertible roof black again?
Quick answer: Deep-clean the hood with a dedicated soft-top cleaner, agitate with a stiff brush, and rinse/repeat until the rinse water runs clear. Let it dry fully, then apply a quality weather-proofer that darkens the fibres (a long-lasting nano coating works well). Most “faded” blacks return. If the fabric is sun-bleached or worn thin, recolouring looks painted — a replacement hood is the only way to get true black back.
To make your cabriolet hood black again, you should clean it and weatherproof it. That will make a huge difference.
We recommend staying clear of products for recolouring your roof. They are products of last resort and frankly a replacement hood is preferable despite the cost.
Just cleaning the hood will make a dramatic difference, as much of the discolouration is actually dirt and dust trapped in the fibres of the fabric. After cleaning, you will find your hood is much darker and the colour more even.
The applying a weatherproof coating will further darken it up, and even it out further. These coatings are slightly oily, and our two-year coating is decidedly thick and 'wet-look'. Just as your hood looks darker when it's wet, it will look darker with a coating on it.
It will even darken up the hood enough so that wear marks look less noticeable, although it won't hide them completely. However, recolouring won't either, making a clean and weatherproof by far the best option.
This works with tan, red, green and blue roofs as well as black roofs, many such cases.
