Are convertible tops waterproof?

Quick answer: Yes—convertible tops are designed to be waterproof, but it’s the hidden rubber/neoprene membrane and seals that keep water out, not the outer fabric. The fabric is weather-resistant and should be kept clean and re-proofed so it doesn’t stay wet. Most “leaks” come from blocked drains or tired door/hood/window seals; re-proofing won’t fix those, but cleaning drains and conditioning seals usually will.

The roof as a whole should be waterproof, but the fabric outer layer is cosmetic and is not. On modern cars there is a waterproof membrane under the fabric which keeps the water out. Leaks on convertible cars are almost always caused by problems with the drainage system or the rubber seals, and not a problem with the membrane.

Leaks on convertible hoods can usually be solved by cleaning, treating or replacement of the rubbers, ensuing latches are properly aligned and unblocking drainage holes and gutters.

This Mini was leaking, but not through the roof. Convertible cars have a lot of extra fittings and features that you might not have thought about, and these are usually the source of leaks in all but very rare cases. Even so, it still makes sense to keep your soft top cleaned and weatherproofed.
