Can panel wipe remove ceramic?

Quick answer: No - panel wipe will not remove a properly cured professional ceramic coating. It removes oils, fillers and wax residues and may dull hydrophobics briefly, but the coating remains; full removal requires machine polishing.

Panel wipe is safe to use on a ceramic coating and will not remove it, just as it is safe to use on car paintwork and will not remove that.

Panel wipe is a solvent, but is very mild, as opposed to a 'hot' solvent like cellulose thinners or acetone.

Panel wipe can be used to remove tar splatter or tree sap, although we would recommend a product especially formulated for this to be on the safe side.

Professional vs Retail Ceramic Coatings

While it will not touch professional coatings, retail ceramic coatings are a synthetic wax with ceramic. Panel wipe is used to remove waxes, silicones and oils, from painted panels, either before repainting or coating with a professional product. As retail coatings are essentially wax, panel wipe will remove them.

What this question is really about

This question is usually asked for one of two reasons. Either an enthusiast has applied a retail “1-year” ceramic coating and wants to remove it to try something else, or a paint or smart-repair technician is preparing a panel for repainting and wants to know if panel wipe will clear the surface properly.

If you're an enthusiast trying to remove a retail coating

Panel wipe alone will not reliably remove a properly bonded ceramic coating - even a retail one. It will strip waxes, sealants and oils, but polymer coatings can be pretty tough.

If you want to remove a coating to apply another:

  • Light machine polishing is the correct method.
  • Abrasive correction physically removes the coating layer.
  • Panel wipe can be used after polishing to remove residues - not as the removal method itself.

If you're preparing a panel for repainting

Panel wipe is designed to degrease and remove contaminants before paint application. It does not remove a ceramic coating. If a panel has been coated, proper mechanical preparation (keying or sanding) is normally required before repainting.

Relying on solvent wipe alone risks leaving bonded protection behind, which may interfere with paint adhesion.

What panel wipe actually removes

  • Polishing oils.
  • Temporary sealants and waxes.
  • Surface contamination and residues.

What actually removes ceramic coating

  • Machine polishing.
  • Abrasive compounding.
  • Sanding during refinishing.

The key point

Panel wipe is a preparation product, not a coating remover. Whether you're swapping products as an enthusiast or preparing for paint as a technician, proper mechanical preparation is what removes ceramic coatings - not solvent wipe alone.

What you should ask next

How do I properly remove a retail ceramic coating?

Light machine polishing is the most controlled way to remove a coating layer before applying a new product.

Will panel wipe remove a spray ceramic or topper?

It may remove light sealants or toppers, but not a fully cured bonded coating.

Can leftover coating affect paint adhesion?

Yes. If a panel has been coated, proper mechanical preparation is important before repainting to ensure adhesion.

Why does panel wipe change water beading?

If it does, it could be because it  removes surface residues and wax layers, which can reveal the true condition of the coating underneath.

If I’m repainting a panel, is sanding enough to remove coating?

Yes. Standard refinishing preparation methods will remove any coating in the treated area.
