Can I touch up over a ceramic coating?
Yes you can.
Regardless of if you have a ceramic coating or not, we highly recommend that you get a touch-in paint.
You can get an exact match from the dealership, a motor accessory shop, or order one online. Most outlets make this easy, you just give them your registration plate number, and they will tell you what colour you need.
A basic one is usually around £5, and if you are not confident you will make a good job of it, will probably do the job, because you don't have to make a good job of it! Yes, I know, it sounds crazy, but hear me out. Stone chips on bonnets and door edges, or scratches on wheel arches can lead to rust. Rust is really bad! So it is better to cover the area with paint and not do a perfect job, than not do it at all and let rust set in.
Unlike the paint finish done at the factory or at a body shop, touch up paint isn't baked on and can easily be removed with some paint thinner. So don't worry if your brush skills aren't up to par, just get stone chips and scratches covered. And then if you want them done properly at a later date, you can find someone with a steady hand to re-do it.
If you do have a steady hand and a little skill with polishing, then in our opinion, the very best kits you can get are from Chipex. These cost considerably more than a paint pen from Halfords, but can be built up, sanded down, polished over, and if there is any chance at all that you can make a deep scratch invisible, then this is the way to do it. If this is the result you want, then you could buy the kit and bring it to us to do for you (Unfortunately, we can't do just chips, but we can provide this service to remove a scratch or if you are booked in with us for something else).
We give this advice for all cars, regardless of coating. But if you do have a ceramic or graphene coating, that is the way to go if you want to keep your car looking perfect. Any repaired areas, for example those that have been filled in, flattened and polished, can be re-coated with your chosen protection product.
