Who fixes water leaks in cars?

Almost any garage mechanic CAN fix a leak in a car; however, that doesn't mean they want to do it, will get it right, or give you the results you are looking for.

Many garage mechanics really don't like this kind of work because it comes with a host of problems:

  1. Finding the leak: The customer brings a car to them with water in a footwell, and with the assumption that water must be leaking from around that area. But water always ends up at the lowest point, and could be leaking from almost anywhere. So they have to find the leak.
  2. There could be more than one leak: When you find what you are looking for, you usually stop looking. And so it is with leaks. They find a leak, and stop looking because time is money, and the customer isn't paying them to check the entire car. They are paying for a leak to be fixed, and a fixed leak they will get. But this could mean that they have an angry customer returning after a month complaining that they didn't fix the leak.
  3. They are not equipped to fix leaks: Often a leak is caused by a perished part which needs to be replaced, but isn't readily available on the shelves of a parts company. They don't stock blanking plates and rubber sets, so they may need to be ordered from Germany, Japan or South Korea. This can take a lot of time unless you are equipped to improvise, but most mechanics don't stock a range of sealants, weatherproof sheeting and generic grommets and bungs.
  4. The car needs to be dried: The customer probably doesn't know it and thinks the car will dry out on its own, but people in the trade know it. If you don't dry it out, it can cause a range of problems from corrosion to electrical problems. But most mechanics are not equipped to remove water from cars or dry out carpets.

All in all, fixing leaks can be a serious pain for mechanics because it isn't really what they are set up to do. It often leads to dissatisfied customers coming back, demanding they finish the job. Unless you are really streamlined to work efficiently, repairing leaks is not very profitable, and can soon become a loss if things don't go right. As a result, you may find many garages reluctant to take on your car. If it is too far to travel to a company that specializes in leak repairs, then shop around until you find somebody eager to do the work.
