Levelling (Two-Towel Method)
Quick answer: Levelling is the wipe-off step after applying a ceramic coating - you spread and remove excess with a first towel, then refine with a clean second towel to leave a thin, even film with no streaks or high spots.
What it means
After the product flashes, you use a short-pile or tight-weave microfibre to level the coating, evening out thickness and removing surplus. A second, clean towel follows to refine the finish and pick up residue. Done correctly, the film cures uniformly and looks crystal clear.
Why it matters
- Prevents high spots, smears and rainbowing from curing into the finish.
- Delivers consistent film build for predictable durability and gloss.
- Reduces wipe-induced marring by using clean, appropriate towels and light pressure.
- Improves efficiency and repeatability when working panel by panel.

Common mistakes
- Levelling outside the open window, so the film has already started to set.
- Using a saturated or fluffy towel first - it can leave lint and drag product, creating streaks.
- Working areas that are too large, so overlaps and edges cure unevenly.
- Pressing too hard or moving too slowly, which can create grabby wipe marks.
- Failing to flip or swap towels frequently, re-depositing residue instead of removing it.
