Where can I learn to apply ceramic coatings?

Quick answer: Take a reputable detailing course - ideally brand-accredited - that teaches decontamination, machine polishing, panel prep and applying coatings in controlled conditions. Practise on spare panels or an older car first. We don’t offer training, so check accredited trainers or the coating brand’s installer programme.

Any of the major manufacturers of professional ceramic coatings will provide training; in fact, they will insist on it, before allowing you to be an agent for their product.

We would recommend contacting Autosmart who run a number of courses including machine polishing and ceramic coating application. They will, of course, teach you how to specifically use their products (which are very good), but the only barrier to entry is that you are a professional detailer.

What this question is really about

This question often comes from interest rather than readiness. People see the results of ceramic coatings and assume the main barrier is simply learning the technique.

In reality, the answer depends entirely on which type of ceramic coating is being discussed, something that is rarely clear from the question alone.

Retail ceramic products do not require training

Retail ceramic-labelled products sold for public use are designed to be applied without formal training. Instructions are simplified, tolerances are wide, and mistakes are usually temporary.

Learning to use these products is a matter of following manufacturer guidance, not professional instruction.

Professional ceramic coatings are a different discipline

Semi-permanent ceramic coatings supplied to professionals are not intended for casual or untrained use. Training is only one part of a much wider professional framework.

  • Controlled environments are required
  • Paint assessment and preparation are critical
  • Application judgement develops through experience
  • Mistakes are permanent and costly to correct

Why training alone is not enough

Even when formal training exists, it assumes an existing foundation. Understanding paint systems, defect correction, inspection lighting, and environmental control all come before coating application itself.

This is why professional ceramic coatings are normally restricted to approved or accredited applicators.

Why we don’t recommend the public pursue professional training

Without the supporting infrastructure and ongoing experience, training in professional coatings can create false confidence. The risk of permanent paint damage outweighs the benefit.

Common misunderstandings

  • Applying ceramic coatings is not just a skill you “pick up”
  • Watching videos is not equivalent to professional training
  • Professional coatings are not intended as enthusiast products

What responsible guidance looks like

  • Use retail ceramic products only within their intended scope
  • Do not attempt to access or apply professional coatings without accreditation
  • Choose trained professionals for semi-permanent coatings
  • Understand that results come from systems, not single skills

What this means for owners

If you are an enthusiast, retail ceramic products are the appropriate option. Professional ceramic coatings sit within a trade environment, where training, facilities, and experience work together. For long-term protection, professional application is the correct route.
