What happens if i damage my ceramic coating?

Quick answer: Don’t worry - if a ceramic coating is marked, etched or scuffed, it can be corrected. The usual fix is to machine-polish the affected area, which removes the coating there, then reapply; if the paint is scratched, that must be corrected first. Spot repairs are normally all that’s needed - a full strip and re-coat is only for widespread damage.

Depending on the extent of the damage.

If you get a slight scratch, we can try to polish out the damage and then reapply the coating. If it doesn't polish out, we may be able to reduce the visibility of the scratch and/or touch it in. Again, we would reapply the coating.

In the case of scuffs on bumpers or crash damage, you might need to have a smart repair or body shop repair, in which case we can re-apply the ceramic coating about a week later once the paint has had a chance to cure.

In either case, you would pay for the cost of re-application to the localized area, in addition to the cost of repair.

What this question is really about

In most cases, this question comes from concern that a ceramic coating somehow changes what can be done if a panel is scratched or damaged. Customers often worry that repairs become more complicated, or that damage cannot be dealt with in the usual way.

Scratches are dealt with in the normal way

If a ceramic-coated panel is scratched, it is assessed in exactly the same way as any other car.

  • Light scratches can often be polished out
  • Deeper damage may need touching in
  • Severe damage may require panel repainting

The presence of a ceramic coating does not prevent any of these options.

What happens to the ceramic coating on a repaired panel

Any polishing or paint repair work will remove the ceramic coating from the affected area. Once the repair is complete, that panel can simply be re-coated.

Re-coating a single panel is routine

Re-applying ceramic coating to a repaired panel is not unusual and does not require the whole car to be re-done. It is a straightforward process once the paintwork is corrected.

If the car was originally coated by us, we will already know which coating system was used. If that specific product is no longer available, an equivalent coating can be applied.

Is there usually a cost?

Yes – re-coating a repaired panel is normally chargeable, as it involves preparation, application, and curing time. However, this is no different to paying for any other professional repair work.

What if the damage is repaired under insurance?

If a panel is repaired or resprayed as part of an insurance claim, the cost of reapplying the ceramic coating to that panel can usually be included in the claim. This is worth discussing with the insurer or repairer at the time.

What this means for owners

Damaging a ceramic-coated panel does not create a special problem. The panel is repaired in the normal way, and the coating is simply reapplied afterwards. Ceramic coating does not complicate repairs – it just adds a final step.
