Rain Water Leak Repairs | BMW 1 Video
Sometimes you never know where you will find a leak. And it can be hard to tell if your repair has actually worked.
Water in boot
This car came to us with water in the boot, and it was a bit of a mystery as to where it was coming from. The car had had a leak before which had been repaired, but the car was a bit damp. Was the water there from the last leak, was it still leaking, or had it developed new leaks?
It was a bit of a combination. We don't think the car had dried out from the last time it had leaked, and the driver's passenger side floor was still wet underneath the carpets. It is important to get this dried, as condensation can get into your electrics and cause a host of problems.
We found a leaking rear light, possibly as a result of a crash repair. The grommets where the electrics enter the tailgate were also a bit loose. The rubber should be soft and supple and form a tight seal, but after many years with the sun beating down on a car, these will dry out and the plasticizers which keep them soft dry out. The result is that they can shrink, become deformed and even crack. They can either be replaced or revived with a treatment, if they aren't too far gone.
Wet Footwell Carpets
Although the carpets were dry on the surface, the underlay can be several inches thick on many modern cars, and you don't know what you might find until you take a look. In this case, the footwells were wet on both sides. It is possible that when the leak caused by the cables that run through the bulkhead was fixed, they didn't dry the car. But it is also likely that the rear footwell is wet because of the leaky door membrane. These leaks are simple repairs, done quickly, and then we got on with the job of drying the car.
