We thought we would give you some DIY advice on how to fix and dry a leaky car while we were doing this Nissan Note.

We get a fair few people who want us to find the leak so that they can repair it themselves. We also get quite a few who want us to do the repairs, but don't want to have us decontaminate and dry the car. It's true, it can all end up quite expensive to do the whole job properly from start to finish, so if you want to save money by doing it all yourself, this video will lay out exactly what you have to do.

We really do recommend that you dry your car, it will not dry out on its own. There is likely to be far more water in your car than you can imagine because the chances are, by the time you notice your carpets are damp, the floor pans are already full up with water. Driving along with the windows open just isn't going to do the job. We frequently find that even after we have got the carpets up, sucked out several gallons of water, it still takes us 24-48 hours to dry the car out using industrial heated dehumidifiers.

Even if you fix the leak, if the car is still full of water, you still have the problem. This leads to your windows steaming up, and that condensation gets onto every metal surface inside the car, rusting everything from electrical connectors and handbrake cables to the bolts and brackets that hold the car together. Not to mention, there is a good chance that computer control units are often submerged as they are often hidden under the floor. Even if they aren't submerged, your cables may be, and capillary action can pull the water along the wiring loom.

So it is a serious issue, and we haven't even got to the health hazards related to mould and mildew. We hope this video helps those wanting to do it themselves, but if it all seems a bit much, then avail yourself of a professional car water leak service.

If you are confident you can find and fix the leak, we also have a drying service.
