Three Blue Tesla | Car Paint Protection Video
We had three arrive within a short space of time, all blue, and all for ceramic and graphene protective coatings on their brand-new paintwork.
It left us wondering what the plural for Tesla is. Teslari?
All these cars were brand new with just a few hundred miles on the clock, in fact some of the new Tesla we have coated have arrived by transporter. The best time to put a ceramic coating on a car is when it's new, and before it has a chance to collect any scratches or wash marks. It is also cheaper as we have less work to do to prepare the car for the coating.
We do still have to prepare the car though, it is cleaned with a soap which will remove the dealership wax, then it is checked for fallout contamination, as dealerships are often located on factory estates along railway lines so rail dust and other industrial contamination is always a possibility. Then the car is machine polished to clean the paintwork and give it that extra shine.
You most certainly can make a car shinier than when it came out of the factory. When cars are manufactured, a robot sprays the paint on and that's the end of it. They use a self levelling paint, but when seen under a microscope it is still fairly rough, there is also an orange peel effect. Polishing it will sharpen it up significantly, you can tell the difference.
The cars are then cleaned with alcohol to remove any residue of polishing compounds, and then they are ready to be coated.
The first car, a Tesla Model 3, was coated in Matrix Blue, which is a three-year coating. A Tesla Model Y got a Matrix Black, which is the longer lasting eight year coating from the Matrix range.
Finally, a Model Y got a Lustrous GS graphene coating, which is a 10 year.
So the question is, can you tell the difference? There is no question they are all very shiny, and that's because 90% of the shine comes from the polishing. But there is a slight difference. There isn't much between Matrix Black and Blue, but the Lustrous GS is definitely richer. We'll leave it up to you to decide if there is enough difference to make a difference, but generally people don't want their cars coated because they want it to have maximum shine. They want it for the protection, self cleaning and ease of maintenance, in which case, if you only intend to keep the car for three years, a three-year coating is just the job.
Worthy of note, is that two of these cars also had leather protection. As you can see in the video, the second car had the whitest leather we had ever seen. That could be difficult to keep clean, so a protective coating over the leather makes a lot of sense.
