It's a good idea to protect your car with some kind of paint protection and in this case the sealant we used was Matrix Black, an 8-year ceramic coating.

...but before we could do any of that the car needed to be prepared because any coating will only seal in what you have, so it's important the car looks immaculate before the sealant goes on.

The first job was repairing the back bumper, so the car went off to Kraftwork for a re-spray. Once the car was returned we fixed the worst problems with the paintwork using paintwork correction to polish out any obvious scratches and marks. Then the car was given a 4-stage buff which is part of our polishing system, and the car was carefully detailed.

The Matrix is applied carefully, ensuring it covers every millimetre of the car. Application is time sensitive, so great care is taken to make sure it's on for the correct amount of time to flash off before the excess is removed. As soon as it is applied, chemical reactions take place, and it needs time to fully cure, which is why in this video Gary tells the customer that he can take the car, but it will need to be garaged overnight. As you can see, it rained, so the car was left with us, so it could set overnight.

Once fully hardened, Matrix Black forms a ceramic coating over the surface of the car which is just a few molecules thick, but this is enough to toughen the surface of the paintwork and makes it noticeably more glossy.

How many layers of ceramic coating does a car need?

Of the ceramic coatings we use, they require one or two coats, depending on the type. They are just molecules thick, and adding more layers doesn't make them better. We believe that applying a second coat does little more than even it out and ensure nothing was missed.
There are products that require multiple stages over several days, but we shy away from these products. If there is any benefit to this other than allowing the detailer to 'make a meal of it', hold onto your car for days and charge triple the price, then we don't know what it is.
