This lovely Mercedes came to us nearly new for a ceramic coating. It had some bug splatter on the front and some colour transfer on the leather seats.

Your leather seats are painted in order to get them that colour, and because this special paint needs to be very flexible. It is packed full of plasticizers, which are kinda wet! I won't bore you with the chemical intricacies, but suffice to say that they can suffer from solvent migration and other related issues, which means that the dye in your clothing can migrate from your jeans into your leather seats.  It's not something you would ever notice if you had black seats, but cream leather can be left with a slight coloured tint.

The way to prevent this is with a nano-coating especially designed to create a barrier on the surface of the leather.

As well as having a ceramic coating, this Mercedes had the leather protected, a coating on the wheels to protect against brake dust and metal partials, and it also has a hydrophobic coating on the cabriolet roof.

If you ever owned a white car, you will know it shows dirt, especially bug splatter, which can be extremely difficult to remove. It gets pounded into your grill when you hit those bugs at 70mph, and then it gets baked on. A ceramic coating is very tough, but won't stop you hitting insects, it will make them much easier to clean off in future.

How are ceramic coatings applied?

Before we can even think about applying a ceramic coating, the car needs to be repaired. The car will be decontaminated to remove any metal particles, spots of clay or tree sap. It will be polished until the paintwork is as perfect as we can get it. The car is then washed down with alcohol, because the polishing compounds contain oils and silicones, which might prevent the ceramic coating adhering to the car. Only then is the ceramic coating applied to the car using applicator pads, with great care taken to cover every millimetre. We then watch and wait, and after a while the thin liquid coating will "flash off", appearing hazy. It is very important not to try to take it off too soon, or leave it on too long, but when the time is right we'll remove the excess and the car is almost finished.  The ceramic coating will continue to cure over the next 24 hours, and in our subjective opinion, over this time it will become even more shiny.
