We conducted a pre lease inspection on a Volvo to the BVRLA standards, and during this check found multiple scratches and chips that may flag up in the actual examination.

The main issue with this car are the dents. These are definitely chargeable, so we would recommend getting those removed with paintless dent removal.

There are quite a number of chips which are through the paintwork. You can also be charged for these, but as Gary says, they are nothing to worry about because if they are filled in with a touch-up paint that is acceptable and easy to do.

The third issue is the scratches, which, although they won't pass, they are fairly minor and can probably be polished out.

If the car was sent back as is, a lease inspector would have to note all the accumulative damage. And just by looking, you can't really tell if a dent can be removed or if a scratch can be polished out. Therefore, they will most likely assume it can't, and so may mark down each affected panel for 'repair and repaint'. This is a more expensive repair than polishing out the scratches and touching in the chips.

The lease company allows for normal wear and tear (which is why dents and scratches below 10mm are acceptable), and beyond that, they expect some damage. If the cost of repairing that damage falls below a threshold, they won't charge you. But if the damage does warrant them doing the admin and paperwork, they will hit you with the lot.

So on our lease inspection, we aim to repair enough of the damage to get you below the threshold. We won't recommend you do every little thing!
