Detailing is a broad word. To some people it means a valet; to others it means taking a car apart and bringing it back to something close to what it was. We do the latter. Our guys are trained on paint correction, odour elimination, upholstery restoration and ceramic coating prep -- the kind of work where the hours show in the result. If you want it done properly, this is the right place.
One customer, Mrs Edwards, brought in a car her kids had turned into a shed -- spills, smell, scuffs inside and out. A day on the interior, a session on the paint. She sold it afterwards for considerably more than she'd been offered before bringing it to us.
The work uses professional kit: dual-action and rotary polishers, extraction machines, ozone generators, steam and specialist fabric and leather chemistry. Each service below is stand-alone -- most customers come in for one specific thing rather than a package.
Fabric convertible hoods fade, attract mould and collect moss faster than most owners expect. Leave it long enough and the hood needs replacing -- typically after 8-12 years without care. We clean the fabric back to its original colour, kill the mould and seal the surface so it sheds water and resists staining. Most customers add years to a hood they thought was past saving.
Your paint dulls over time, wash marks, fine scratches and oxidization build up until the gloss is gone. We machine polish it back: cutting out the damage and bringing the depth of shine back to how it looked when you drove it away from the showroom. Most of our customers then seal that finish with a ceramic coating so it stays that way for years.
Tar, tree sap, graffiti and industrial fallout don't wash off with soap and water. They bond to the paint and need chemical treatment to shift them properly. We identify what's on the car, apply the right product and remove it cleanly. In most cases a polish afterwards brings the finish back to its best.
Bringing the shine back is what it's all about, making your car look as good, or even better than the day you got it. We can give you that new car feeling at a fraction of the cost of a new car. Our exterior detail covers everything the paintwork needs: decontamination, clay bar treatment and a protective finish, so the results last, not just until the next rain shower.
A regular valet cleans what's visible. We go further: extracting grime from carpets and seats, deodorising fabrics, conditioning leather and cleaning into the vents and door cards that most people never touch. You get back in and it smells and feels like a different car.
The best time to detail your car is right at the very beginning, straight from the dealership. Prepare your car for a life on the road, and minimize stone chips, build up on wheels, stains on seats and scuffs on leather.
If you have had a leak in your car, it's been caught in a flash flood, or you have driven through a deep ford, and now you have wet carpets, you will need to get your car dried before it causes other issues such as mould, corrosion and electrical problems.
What Professional Car Detailing Actually Involves
Paint decontamination and correction
Paint decontamination and correction removes bonded contamination -- tar, iron fallout, industrial deposit -- that washing cannot touch. Polishing then removes oxidation, wash marks and surface scratches; deeper scratches may need additional stages. The number of passes depends on the condition of the paint, and cutting corners shows in the result.
Interior extraction and restoration
A proper interior detail means every surface treated with the correct chemistry for what it is made of. Fabric, leather, alcantara and vinyl all need different products and different methods. Difficult jobs need more. Heavy soiling, spillages and pet contamination mean extraction, steam and full drying. We have the equipment to dry a car properly. It comes back smelling clean, not damp. Odour treatment is its own discipline. Masking an odour and eliminating its source are not the same thing.
Soft-top and specialist surface care
Convertible hoods are hard work to clean properly. Despite what you may have been told, there is no such thing as re-dying a roof. Roof dye is actually paint and you end up with a finish that looks like painted canvas, not soft mohair. This is not the path we take. We clean them without re-colouring: hard work and the persistence to keep going until it is actually done. You cannot see whether you got all the dirt until the roof is dry -- if you missed a patch, you start again. Then dry it again. Drying matters: you cannot apply a water repellent coating to wet fabric.
Protection and prep
Detailing is also the foundation for paint protection. A ceramic coating applied to uncorrected paint locks in every scratch and swirl mark permanently. Correct prep (polish, decontaminate, panel-wipe) is what separates a coating that lasts from one that fails early.
Car Detailing FAQs
How much does professional car detailing cost?
It depends on the work involved. A single-stage exterior polish on a well-maintained car runs differently from a multi-stage correction on a car with heavy swirling. Interior work is priced on condition and time, not car size. We give an estimate after a brief assessment here in Chelmsford -- most take two minutes by photo. Call or message and we will give you a realistic figure the same day.
How long does it take?
A full exterior polish takes three to six hours depending on the correction level. A full interior restoration takes four to eight hours depending on condition. We book a full day for combined work. Cars left with us are kept under cover and returned the same day in most cases, occasionally the next morning for more complex jobs.
Is it worth detailing a high-mileage or older car?
Often yes. Paint correction in particular can transform the appearance of an older car dramatically -- oxidised, dull paint responds very well to polishing. The question is whether the cost is proportionate to the car’s value or what you plan to do with it. We will give you an honest assessment rather than take on work that does not make sense for you.
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. We work on everyday cars as well as classics and performance vehicles. The approach is the same: assess the surfaces, use the correct products and process, do the job properly. The make or value of the car does not change that.
We’ve been detailing cars for over thirty-five years. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you exactly what’s involved -- most estimates are back within the hour.
