Odour lives where a valet can't reach -- inside door seals, under seat runners, in HVAC ducting, behind trim panels. Our process starts at the source: strip, locate, treat the substrate, then seal. Masking products buy a few days; eliminating the source ends it.
Find the source - treat the whole interior
Most odour treatments that don't work share the same reason: they treated the smell, not the source. Shampoo, odour bombs and air freshener can suppress a smell briefly -- if any trace of the substance causing it remains, in seat runners, behind dashboard trim, in carpet underlay or under rear carpets, the smell returns. Our first job is to locate what's producing the odour. Once the source is removed, we treat the whole interior. Air fresheners follow treatment; they don't replace it.
If you've had a spill, call us before you wash it. Diluting milk with water spreads it through seat foam and carpet underlay, where it ferments and becomes much harder to extract. Petrol and diesel float on water and can permeate plastic trim and bare paintwork. The sooner we deal with it, the simpler the job.
The treatment also depends on what caused the smell. Smoke and tar need ozone treatment and fogging to reach surfaces you can't clean by hand. Biological contamination -- milk, pet urine, mould -- needs enzyme-based products that break down the organic matter rather than masking it. Chemical spills like petrol or paint need extraction and neutralisation before anything else. The right approach for one won't work for another, which is why we assess before we treat.
We have over 35 years experience in removing stubborn car smells and have worked with all the major car insurance companies to provide an expert car odour removal service which they can rely on.
We have many years experience in removing various kinds of spillage from vehicle interiors. While this is usually paint, we are also equipped to clean up fuel, milk, food and household products and the odours that often result.
Every spring we get calls from people asking, 'how do you remove spilled paint from carpets' or 'Can you help, a whole tin of paint went over in my boot'. So we set up this emergency service especially to cope with extracting wet paint.
Odour Removal FAQs
Why does cigarette smoke smell come back after valeting?
Standard valeting doesn't reach all the sources. The smell comes from ash -- which settles into steering column trim, seat runners, seat belt winders and gaps behind the dash -- and from tar, which coats every hard surface the smoke touched. Shampoo and fragrance mask it briefly; once the air freshener fades, the ash and tar are still there. We strip back trim to clear the ash, and use ozone treatment and fogging to seal tar on surfaces we can't reach by hand.
Why does the smell keep coming back after shampooing?
Shampooing treats the surface. Most persistent smells are in the foam under seats, in carpet underlay or on hard surfaces hidden from view. Until the source is gone from those locations, the smell returns -- especially on warm days when bacteria are most active. 80% of cars we treat have already been shampooed and treated with odour bombs before they arrive.
I've just spilled milk -- what should I do?
Call us before you wash it. Diluting milk spreads it through seat foam and carpet underlay, where it ferments and becomes much harder to extract. We remove the rear carpet -- and sometimes the seats -- to find and treat every contaminated area. The sooner we start, the more straightforward the job.
Do you work for insurance companies?
Yes. We carry out odour removal and decontamination for insurers, including chemical spills, biological incidents and rodent infestations. We can advise on whether your situation is likely to be covered before you make a claim.
How much does odour removal cost?
It depends on what the smell is, how long it's been there and how far it's spread. A fresh spill costs less than a smoke-damaged car that's been valeted twice with no result. Call us and describe the situation -- we'll tell you what we think is involved and what it's likely to cost before you book.
I've spilled paint in my car -- what should I do?
Phone us right now on 01245 350035 and we'll talk you through it. Speed matters with paint -- the longer it sits, the harder the clean-up. If it's out of hours, read our guide to paint spillages before you attempt anything.
We've been removing odours and treating spillages for over thirty-five years. Tell us what you're dealing with and we'll tell you what's involved.
