Detached Rear Window? We Rebond It, No New Hood Needed

If the glass rear window in your convertible roof has started lifting away from the fabric, you don’t need a full replacement roof. Our technician rebonds the pane back into the hood in-house, with a 12-month guarantee on the work.

We’ve seen a run of these jobs recently, mostly after a stretch of unusually hot weather. It’s the same bond failure every time: sun heats the roof, the adhesive softens, and the pane lifts at a corner the next time the roof cycles.

Why the Bond Lets Go

The glass is bonded to the fabric with a thin bead of adhesive running around its edge. Every time the roof opens and closes, that seam flexes. Add direct sun heating the fabric, worse on black and dark-coloured roofs in our experience, and the adhesive softens enough that the bond can split when the roof is next opened.

We haven’t seen this written up anywhere else, so we’re describing what we’ve observed on the cars that come through our workshop, not quoting a manufacturer bulletin, because none exists. Whether cars in permanently hot climates see the same failure is genuinely something we don’t know.

Car Brands We See This On

Audi, Porsche and BMW convertibles are the ones we and other convertible-roof specialists see most often with this fault. We’ve also seen this problem on Jaguar, Volvo and VW Beetle Cabriolet, plus Bentley and Chrysler Crossfire from our own workshop experience.

How We Rebond It

Once the failed adhesive is stripped back, the rebond happens in stages, using a structural adhesive chosen for its heat resistance rather than a generic sealant.

Both bonding surfaces, the fabric and the glass, are cleaned and primed. A temporary seal, a thin bead of sealant, bonds the window to the fabric and aligns it in place; suction cups compress the fabric to the glass while it cures.

Older hoods sometimes have a slight ripple in the canvas around the window from years of stretching. If we spot this on your car, we’ll point it out and explain it before starting; it’s cosmetic and won’t affect how well the rebond holds.

Once the leading edge has fully bonded, we cut away the excess sealant, run a neat bead around the affected area, and finish it so it sits cleanly against the soft-top. The adhesive needs proper time to cure and be tested before the roof goes back into use, so we’ll usually need the car with us for three days.

DIY attempts can make our job harder, or impossible. If the window has already been patched with bathroom sealant, gaffer tape and the like, sometimes it cannot be rebonded at all, and where it can, stripping the old repair out is remedial work charged at our hourly rate.

Booked On Its Own, or With a Hood Service

This can be booked as a standalone repair, but only if the rest of the hood is reasonably clean. The fabric around the window needs to be clean, soft and supple for the bond to take properly; a stiff, grimy hood won’t give the result we want. We can assess this in person, or you can send us a video of the roof and we’ll tell you honestly whether a clean is needed first.

If the hood does need cleaning, it’s usually something you’d want doing anyway, so a hood clean and weatherproof can be done in the same visit as the rebond.
