Renault Clio 2005 | water leak blocked drainage

Video transcript

0:00 Today we have a Renault Clio in, 2005 plate, for a water leak, so we're just going to show you the common problems. So we've removed the scuttle tray and the window wiper and the motor. So basically what we're going to do is we're just going to pour a bit of water down the front of the window screen to fill up the front trough, which should drain off through that pipe there, but as you can see that pipe is blocked because there's no water coming through.

0:24 So if we just quickly go inside the car under the glove box. Okay, so we can see there that it's running in there. And basically what the result of that there is, this be the passenger front footwell, so we can see there's loads of water in that front footwell. And also in the back we've got a massive puddle in there as well. So that would be obviously the effect of that leaking.

Here we have a Renault Clio which has come in for a water leak and has soaking passenger front and passenger rear foot wells it is a common problem due to the centre drain on the scuttle area being blocked and allowing water to back up and then work its way through gaskets and bulkhead.

This really is a very common problem on this model of Renault. Many cars have this design where there is a large box below the windscreen covered by a scuttle, all of them are prone to having leaves and debris build up and block the drainage holes. Water will then either fill this box until it reaches a hole which it can flow out of, or will slop about, sometimes going over the top of the bulkhead. Before you know it, you know it, you have water leaking inside your car and soggy, smelly carpets.

This does seem to be a particular problem with Renaults of various models, but usually it is just a case of flushing the drainage holes through. We advise that if you have a car that does this, to regularly open up the bonnet and remove any debris.

...while not wanting to bash on Renault (although many people would) there are a few other areas where they are prone to leak, so please watch the next few videos is you don't think that this is the cause of your wet carpets.

Question: "My car leaks water on the passenger side, sometimes I can see water dripping from under the glove box onto the floor. My carpets are wet from the front to the back."

Answer: Sometimes, but not always, this is caused by the trough under your windscreen filling with water because the drainage holes get blocked with dead leaves. This causes rain water to leak inside your car. From there it runs down the floor boards till it had filled up the front and back, and you can see wet carpets and smell that damp odour which lets you know things are growing in your carpet.
