Do self healing coatings work?

Self-healing ceramic coatings are largely a marketing claim. The heat-gun demos are real, but it is the clear coat relaxing, not the coating doing anything special.

Several car manufacturers, Mercedes in particular, put serious research into self-sealing paintwork in the early 2000s and abandoned the project. They could get the paint to reflow and reseal itself but could not stop it from moving off the car. It would simply fall off.

One of our suppliers looked into the same problem and found the same result. You can reform a panel with heat, but that is hardly practical as a real-world solution.

The demos you see online (a heat gun fading fine scratches on a "self-healing" coating) have been tested properly, and the result is that the same thing happens on bare clear coat with no coating at all. The plasticity is in the factory clear coat, not the product on top of it. It also takes real heat to get the clear coat to reflow; UK sunshine on a parked car will not do it.

A coating that genuinely healed scratches would be worth knowing about and we would say so. For now, treat the claim as marketing until the science catches up.

Self-healing PPF is a different thing

Paint Protection Film has a heat-activated elastomeric topcoat that relaxes light swirl marks when warmed: by sunlight, warm water or a heat gun. It works on micro-marring, not on stone chips or deep scratches, and it is a genuinely different technology from a ceramic coating. PPF is fitted by an accredited installer to high-impact panels; if that is what you are after, it is worth a separate conversation.
