Mohs hardness (talc=1, diamond=10) is a different scale entirely and is not used for automotive coatings.

Nearly every ceramic coating on sale claims 9H, which is the first clue about how much the number is worth. A rating shared across an entire category cannot separate one product from another, so a headline figure that appears on every box tells a buyer nothing about which box to choose.

The pencil hardness test scratches a cured film in a laboratory under fixed conditions; it says nothing about how paint behaves under a dirty wash mitt, and it certainly does not promise immunity from marring. Technique, cure and film uniformity affect the real-world result far more than the rating does, and safe washing and drying will preserve a finish better than any increase in the letter H. Product listings shorten it to 9H ceramic or 9H scratch test, and owners generally arrive quoting the number without having been told what test produced it.

Nine H is the most quoted number in coating marketing and among the least useful. It shares that ground with diamond coating and glass coating: terms that sound like specifications, describe something narrower than buyers assume, and appear on almost every product in the category.
