Cutting Compound
Quick answer: A cutting compound is a strong abrasive polish used by machine to quickly remove heavier defects, sanding marks and oxidation from car paintwork before finer polishing stages.
A cutting compound is used in the first stages of machine polishing. It has coarser abrasives and is designed to remove paint more quickly. These products are often labelled as coarse or heavy compounds.
What it means
A cutting compound is the heavy end of the polishing range. It contains larger or more aggressive abrasives than a normal polish so it can remove sanding marks, deeper swirl marks, oxidation and other more serious defects in the top layer of paint. Used with a suitable machine polisher and pad, it quickly levels the clearcoat, ready to be refined with milder polishes and finishing compounds.
Why it matters
Cutting compound earns its place when the damage has gone past what a finishing polish can reach. Deeper swirls, etching, overspray and sanding marks all need abrasives that cut rather than refine, and gentler products will skate straight over them. That makes it the workhorse after bodywork and repainting, where sanding scratches and overspray have to come out before fresh paint can be brought up to gloss.
The same aggression is why it needs respect. A high cut removes material quickly, so technique and a paint thickness gauge matter more here than at any other stage; the aim is always to take the minimum clearcoat that does the job. It is also rarely the last step. In paint correction the cutting stage is followed by one or more refining stages, because compound on its own leaves paint that is clear but not yet properly glossy.
What cutting compound is called on a menu
Bodyshops, detailing studios and paint factors stock them, usually labelled as heavy cut or coarse compound. Service menus may refer to "cut and polish", "compound and polish" or "heavy machine cut" when cutting compound is included as part of the work.
Context
In day to day trade language, people often shorten it to "compound" when they mean a strong cutting product. It sits above general polishing compounds and finishing polishes in terms of aggression. On modern clearcoat it is normally used by dual action or rotary machine with matching heavy cut pads, then followed by medium and finishing polishes to remove haze and holograms.
Types of cutting compound
- Traditional rubbing compound: Older style coarse pastes or liquids, often dusty and best suited to very hard or thick paint.
- Modern diminishing abrasive compound: Starts aggressive then breaks down to a finer polish as it is worked, giving a cleaner finish.
- Non diminishing abrasive compound: Maintains a consistent cut for as long as it is worked, useful for controlled defect removal and sanding mark clearance.
How it's used
- Inspection and measurement: Check paint condition and thickness so you know how aggressive it is safe to be.
- Test section: Try the chosen cutting compound and pad on a small area to confirm it removes the defects without over cutting.
- Main cutting stage: Work panel by panel, keeping the pad clean and inspecting often under good lighting.
- Refinement: Follow up with medium polish and finishing compound to remove any haze and restore maximum gloss.
Common mistakes
- Using a strong cutting compound as a one step product and not refining afterwards, leaving heavy haze and holograms in the paint.
- Choosing a very aggressive compound and pad on thin or unknown paint without checking thickness, risking strike through on edges and high spots.
- Working too fast or with a dirty pad so the compound scours the surface instead of cutting cleanly.
- Assuming a cutting compound will fix deep chips or damage that has gone through the paint layers and really needs repainting.
