Silicone / siloxanes (vs silica)
Quick answer: Silicones/siloxanes are man-made oils and polymers used for slickness and water behaviour; silica (SiO2) is an inorganic oxide that forms the glass-like ceramic network in coatings. They are different chemistries and do different jobs.
What it means
Silicones (polysiloxanes such as PDMS) are flexible organosilicon polymers used as lubricants, gloss enhancers and hydrophobics in detailing products. Siloxanes can also be functional molecules (silanes) that bond to paint and change surface energy. Silica is silicon dioxide, an inorganic Si-O-Si network - the ceramic backbone many coatings cure into. Marketing often mixes the terms, but silicone ≠ silica.
Why it matters
Two words that look related describe opposite problems. Silica is what forms the durable ceramic film; silicone is an oil that makes a surface feel slick and can stop the next thing bonding to it at all. Residues left behind by quick detailers, dressings and gloss-enhancing shampoos have to come off with a proper panel wipe before any protection goes down, or the coating is being applied to the residue rather than the paint.
Bodyshops care even more than detailers do, because airborne silicone causes fisheyes in fresh paint, which is why silicone-free prep chemicals are standard in a spray environment. Labels are the remaining trap. Contains SiO2 and contains silicone are not the same statement, and some coatings carry siloxane groups as part of their own chemistry without being silicone oils in the sense that matters for adhesion.
Which products mention silicone or silica
Quick detailers, tyre and interior dressings, shampoos with gloss enhancers and coating toppers are where the ingredients turn up in practice. Manufacturer tech sheets quote a percentage of SiO2 or mention silane and siloxane modification, and bodyshop prep sheets specify silicone-free products by name. Decontamination notes record silicone contamination present or requires additional panel wipe, usually on a car that has been through a drive-through wash with gloss additives.
Context
Silicone contamination is one of the more frustrating decon fails our workshop sees; a car that has been through a drive-through valet with silicone-heavy tyre dressings needs a thorough panel wipe before the ceramic can bond, and cutting that corner is what most early delaminations trace back to.
Common mistakes
- Confusing silicone with silica and assuming they're interchangeable.
- Thinking "silicone-free" means "no SiO2" - silica is not silicone.
- Believing a product with silicones cannot be coated later - correct decontamination and panel wipe remove residues.
- Assuming "% SiO2" alone predicts performance - formulation, prep and curing are equally important.
