Sarah's Volvo XC40 -- a few months old, in for Matrix Black. Gary explains the "pop" that brings out metallic depth, the new-car feeling a coating preserves, and why bird muck is one of those things people only notice when it's already too late.
Sarah's Volvo XC40 is just a few months old. Gary had recently received the Matrix Black accreditation -- "just got the certificates, so we're all legal" -- and this is one of the first cars to go through under the new certification.
Making It Pop
In the trade, "pop" means bringing out the full depth of a metallic finish -- the way the flakes catch the light, the colour saturation, the sense that the paint is several layers deep rather than sitting on the surface. A white metallic like the XC40 can look flat when it has accumulated fine wash marks and micro-scratches. Machine polish first to correct those, then Matrix Black to seal it.
The car is prepared the same way regardless of age: wash, clay bar, machine polish, alcohol panel wipe. Even a few-months-old car picks up wash marks from dealer prep and early washes. Sealing anything in under the coating is permanent -- so the polish pass is not optional.
The New-Car Feeling
Gary's description of why people get ceramic coatings: it is about keeping the new-car feeling going. When you first drive a new car, it feels a particular way -- clean, shiny, fresh. That feeling degrades gradually and most people do not notice it happening until they park next to something newer. A ceramic coating preserves the gloss, makes the car easier to keep clean, and means the feeling lasts significantly longer across the ownership period.
The practical benefits come on top: easier washing, stays cleaner between washes, resistant to bird droppings and environmental contamination. Bird muck is one of those things people tend to discover as a problem after it has already etched into the lacquer -- the coating buys time to deal with it before that happens.
Is It Difficult to Apply
It is not difficult, but it demands precision. There is a procedure, a narrow margin of error, and -- as Gary puts it -- "a sheer drop and no handrail." Our team are fully trained in both machine polishing and coating application. The skill is in the preparation as much as the application itself.
