Matt and Tom have passed Level 3 in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Repair, awarded by the IMI and delivered by the RMI Training Academy in Coventry: three days of theory, a written exam and a practical assessment on a hybrid.

Matt and Tom have just come back from a three-day course to gain the accreditation of Level 3 in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Repair, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry and delivered by the RMI Training Academy in Coventry.

The course is split into three days. Day one is built around intense theory, with extensive reading material to be studied in the evening. Day two is lighter theory followed by the written exam, which the boys passed with flying colours. Day three is a practical assessment carried out on a hybrid vehicle.

Their trainer, Andy, became more of a mentor than an instructor. He not only helped them pass the course; he gave them real-world knowledge of the expertise required to work on these vehicles confidently and safely.

It went straight into use. The boys came back and have already powered down a Toyota Corolla that was in for rodent decontamination, which is exactly the kind of job the training was for: a technician working through a wiring loom with no certainty about what a rodent has already chewed through.

That is the practical point of it for a workshop like ours. We are not an EV specialist and we do not service high-voltage drivetrains. What we do is spend our days tracing water into cabins, boots and bulkheads, and decontaminating interiors, and on a hybrid or an electric car that puts a technician close to high-voltage components and orange cable runs. Being qualified to identify the system, isolate it and power it down properly means we can take the job on rather than turn the car away, and that we can do it without risking the car or the person working on it.

This builds on the Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Awareness and Safety Course that Tom, Alfie and Matt sat in October 2025. That one taught us to work safely around these cars. This one qualifies us to work on them, which matters most for water leak diagnosis, where the damage is wet and the wiring is not always where you expect it.

The course was a great success, and the boys rated the training highly.
