Porsche 911 2005 | Water Leak Detection

Video transcript

0:00 Right, water leak found video, 2005 911 convertible car. Let's show how the water's getting in. Okay, this is simulating rain, obviously it's got a watering can there, but we're pouring the water down where the gap between the glasses, and most cars have a way in, the water goes in there and then it will come out the bottom. But in this particular time it's coming out of the bottom, but on the wrong side of the membrane, so it's coming out there below. So effectively that would go straight over the rubbers and get in the car. So that's one way water's getting in. Now

0:34 we've got a little bit of a suspicion it's about this area here, because the rubbers are all a bit grubby and dry and dirty. Normally the water would run down there and through a little drainy bit, so this all needs a good clean. Now we've got the wet bit on the carpet there, behind the driver's seat.

0:51 Now that carpet is all wet. I'll show you that. I can feel it, and it's wet under here as well, and the foam is quite thick, but it's wet. That usually comes from the drains at the back here, because they have drains in here and it's a known problem; you might be able to find another video on that. But the water is supposed to run down the roof and through these little gaps, and then it will then go down and through and into the arch. But clearly they're blocked, which is why the water is coming through and onto the back

1:24 place where the seats would sit. These are little pop-out seats, so here's the one here, and you can see there it's wet on the back, and this is absolutely sodden. I don't think you can see my fingers moving in the water, but that's absolutely sodden there, and the same here, because it finds its way over. So this will need to come out to be dried. Now just show you that this is where the moulds gone. So people don't realise, you've got the headline in there and there's mould all the way down. The whole headline is smothered in mould, so

1:54 that will need to be cleaned with an antimicrobial. And also you've got here, across here, this is where the rubbers will need cleaning, because this is obviously where the water's been let in. So it's come past that, probably blocked the drain as well, and you've got dirt in all the sweep sets. So we'll show the car when it's all done. The customer's going to have all the seats out, and we're going to make the car like you again as well. It's going to have the hood cleaned and reproofed. You can see all the green on it.

2:22 And of course there is more mould on that side, so just got to keep away from that.

It is a known problem for Porsche to leak from around the roof because many of them are convertibles and cabriolet roofs have a lot of potential entry points at drainage holes and around the windows.

This Porsche also has a problem with the drivers-side door membrane, which leads to water in the footwell.

Solution: We will replace both door membranes with new ones. We replace both because if the driver's side has aged and is leaking, there's a good chance the passenger side will also leak soon.

We will clean out all the guttering and drainage from the roof mechanism, above the boot area, clean and refurbish all the rubbers around the door windows. Not only that, but we also need to treat the inside of the roof to neutralize all that mould.

As usual, we will dry the car, but we have a lot more work to do on this Porsche 911. We  do a lot more here at New Again than just find and fix leaks. We also refurbish modern cars and make them like new again. Not only that, but we can clean and reproof convertible roofs, repair leather upholstery, and make your paintwork better than the day it left the factory, polishing it to a fine finish and applying a ceramic coating.

Question: "I have seen that you  can refurbish the hood, and I'm thinking of having the paintwork buffed up. Can you do it all at the same time?"

Answer: It all depends on you. What we would suggest is that you get the car to us for an inspection and while it's here we can assess the car and make some suggestions. Some people send their cars to us on a transporter, and we have had cars come from all over Europe, and in these cases we treat them as a project. We take care of everything from wheel refurbishment to bodywork repairs and give the car back to the customer fully restored. In other cases we will do a car bit-by-bit with it coming back every few months and sometimes year after year for us to maintain the vehicle in pristine condition.  Either way is fine by us, but first job is to detect and repair any leaks.
