Tar Remover

What it means

Tar removers use safe solvents (often aliphatic or citrus d-limonene) to soften and dissolve stuck-on tar, glue and road grime that shampoo will not touch. Applied after washing and before claying, they break the bond so contamination lifts off cleanly. Correct use is cool panel, short dwell, gentle wipe, then thorough rinse.

Why it matters

Dissolving beats scraping. Tar remover breaks the deposit down chemically so it lifts away, which avoids the scratches that come from attacking a hard speck with a mitt or a fingernail.

It also makes the next stage cleaner. Fewer specks left on the paint means fewer things for a clay bar to catch and drag, so claying causes less marring than it otherwise would. Bonding improves for the same reason, because coatings, sealants and PPF all sit down more reliably on paint that has nothing stuck to it.

Where it earns its keep is the lower half of a car. Wheel arches, sills and the bottoms of doors collect tar faster than anything else on the vehicle, and those are exactly the panels most likely to be rushed.

Ours is Autosmart Tardis, and there is one thing worth knowing before you reach for any trade-strength tar remover: it takes wax and sealant off along with the tar. That is deliberate rather than a fault, because stripping old protection is half of what these products are for, but it does mean that if you have just waxed the car you are re-waxing whatever panel you treat. Some will soften solvent-sensitive plastics or bleach trim too, so test anywhere you are unsure.
