Decontamination

Quick answer: Decontamination is the process of removing bonded and embedded contamination from paint: using chemical and mechanical steps - so polishing and coatings can bond and perform properly.

What it means

After a thorough wash, chemical decontamination dissolves specific contaminants (iron fallout, tar, sap) and mechanical decontamination (usually a clay bar, clay pad or clay mitt with lubricant) lifts what remains. A final panel wipe removes polishing oils before protection. The result is a clean, smooth, high-energy surface ready for correction and coating.

Why it matters

Washed is not clean. A car can come off a thorough wash with the paint still carrying bonded iron fallout, tar and industrial deposits that shampoo was never going to move, and every process that follows assumes those are gone.

Adhesion is the first casualty if they are not, because coatings and film bond to whatever is actually on the surface rather than to the paint underneath. Polishing suffers next, since grit dragged around under a pad produces the marring the polish was meant to remove. Embedded particles left in place also shorten the life of the protection and invite corrosion under the film, and they make results uneven, so water behaves differently from one panel to the next once the car is finished.

When decontamination happens in a job

Quotes place it ahead of paint correction, ceramic coating, sealant or wax, and before PPF installation or touch-in paintwork. Detailing menus list it as decontamination, chemical decon or wash and decon, and inspection notes record heavy bonded contamination, fallout present throughout or requires full decontamination before correction. It is also the line that most often needs explaining, because a car that looks clean can still be carrying a full load of bonded fallout.

Context

Decontamination is where our workshop begins every correction or coating job without exception; it is invisible work the customer never sees, but skipping it is where corners get cut and where coatings that should last years start failing early.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping chemical decontamination and grinding particles into paint with clay.
  • Claying a dirty or dry panel, or using heavy pressure that induces marring.
  • Using iron remover on hot panels or leaving it to dry.
  • Assuming a panel wipe replaces decontamination - it removes oils, not bonded contaminants.
  • Mixing strong cleaners without rinsing and neutralising properly.
