Matrix Blue Ceramic Coating | Audi A5

A brand new Audi A5 straight from the dealer for Matrix Blue ceramic coating. Gary explains the self-cleaning effect honestly, and between takes notices the coating has visibly got shinier as it cures -- "oh my god, wow."

A brand new Audi A5 -- came straight from the dealership to us. The owner wanted it protected from day one. Matrix Blue three-year ceramic coating, and possibly the convertible roof nano-coated at a later visit.

The Self-Cleaning Effect -- Honest Version

Gary explains it the way he always does when someone asks about ceramic coatings being "self-cleaning": it does not clean itself indefinitely. The honest version is this. The car gets dirty, as all cars do. Then it pours with rain. The water rolls off the hydrophobic surface, taking a lot of the surface dirt with it. The car is not perfectly clean -- it is slightly less dirty than before. But sometimes you look out a week later and think "oh, it must have rained -- it looks clean today." That is how it works. You clean it roughly half as often as you otherwise would.

"Sometimes you don't want to keep having to clean your car. You could be driving this car right down the coast, roof down, smiling, glasses on. How great would you feel?"

Getting Shinier as It Cures

Gary walks out between takes, catches sight of the car from the side, and stops. "Oh my god, wow." The coating was on its second coat and had been curing. Ceramic coatings tend to deepen and get slightly shinier as they cure -- not indefinitely, but in the first hours and days the gloss intensifies. Combined with the sun catching the metallic at a different angle, the pop had really come through. Even the wheels had got noticeably more glossy since the last piece of footage.
