Convertible Mini Cooper | Roof Clean & Weatherproofing (Part 2)

Mini Cooper soft-top: hood clean, two-year nano-coating, Krytox rubbers, rear drain flush, exterior detail. Jet-wash damage (visible lines) treated; green mould removed; fold-line wear assessed after.

This Mini Cooper came in for a hood clean and reproof with two-year nano-protection, Krytox rubber conditioning, a rear drain flush and an exterior detail.

What we found before we started

The roof looked reasonable when wet; when it dries you could see it was spotty with shadows and pressure lines running across it. The customer told us she had taken it somewhere and they had jet-washed it. High-pressure washing forces water and dirt into the fabric weave rather than lifting it out; the lines left behind are a tell. There was also visible green mould building up in the fabric and a reasonable amount of embedded dirt.

The rubber trim piece around the back had already been replaced by the customer before she brought it in; it had perished. Gary noted a couple of small nicks in the rubber on both the driver and passenger sides; those were logged with the customer.

The result

After the machine clean, nano-coating and Krytox treatment the roof came out looking very good. There are fold lines visible at the crease points; that is normal wear on any folding roof and does not affect how the hood works. One edge of the plastic trim was lifting slightly at a fold; again, cosmetic only.

See our convertible roof cleaning and restoration page for details on the clean and reproof, and cabriolet hood protection for the nano-coating options.
