Volvo XC-40 end-of-lease: scratches over one inch long polished out. Two scuffed wheels remain but with the scratches gone the total damage falls below the recharge threshold. Spare key warning included.

This Volvo XC-40 had scratches over one inch in length, which puts them outside what lease companies classify as fair wear and tear. The threshold is clear: scratches below one inch are accepted, anything longer is chargeable.

We were able to buff out all the scratches, which changed the picture entirely. What was left was two scuffed wheels. The recharge for a pair of wheels is usually around the trade repair cost -- roughly comparable -- but once the scratches were gone, the car's total residual damage dropped below the threshold where a lease company considers it worth sending a bill. The wheels would probably pass without a charge.

One other thing to make sure of: the spare key. Replacing a lost spare key through a dealer costs considerably more than the original, and lease companies charge for it at that rate. Keep it safe.
