Ford Focus headlight restoration. Headlight replacement is hundreds of pounds -- polishing and resealing with ceramic is faster and far cheaper. UV coating degraded, plastic oxidised and yellowed: sanded back, polished, ceramic applied.
Headlight replacement on modern cars means replacing the entire unit -- you cannot just swap the plastic lens. On some models that runs to hundreds of pounds per side. In most cases it is completely unnecessary.
The factory UV coating on plastic headlight lenses degrades over time, and once that happens, the plastic underneath starts to oxidise, yellow, and craze. It looks bad and it reduces light output. But the plastic itself is intact; it is just the surface that has failed. We sand the surface flat, polishing through progressively finer grades to bring the clarity back, and then seal the restored surface with a ceramic coating to protect it from UV and keep it clear.
The result looks new. The ceramic on the lens also keeps it cleaner, which means the lights stay brighter for longer between cleans. On an MOT, dull headlights are a failure point -- polishing them out is a fast, cheap way to pass and to restore how the front of the car looks at the same time.
