Audi Q7 S line 2009 | leaking windscreen

Video transcript

0:00 We're currently doing a test on the windscreen using a method we use here, and we have found it to be leaking. My colleague's just going to carry out a pressure test now. You can see it there, that's a poor seal at the top of the windscreen which is clogged in the air. It's just clogged in the inside to the outside of the car.

0:23 In turn, the water will find its way into the footwell and cause a very wet footwell. We do this on both sides. My colleague's just got a spray pour up now on the screen, and this side could be leaking as well, so you should see the same. There you go, so you see there the bubble's pushing up, so the stream will need to come out and be refilled. The reason there isn't a stream in the car is that it's kind of oil, but it's not unheard of to see that happen as time goes by, it's

1:10 moulded the car now, so it could be that the bond has actually been up, which in turn also causes the pressure as you see coming out at the top there. So this will cause water ingress into the front. So likely this is probably wet foot wheels, we've got to check into this obviously.

1:25 It can also create mould and smells as well. It's not got to that stage yet, but we'll get this put right and get it back out on the road.

Here we have an Audi Q7 S line which has got an original Audi window screen but with us doing a pressure test you can see that the top bond has perished or worn away which is now allowing water to ingress down the bulkhead.

If this had been a newly fitted windscreen, you would have issue with the windscreen company, and it's time to contact them. In our experience, windscreen companies are happy to repair leaking windscreens as long as you can show they are responsible for the leak and the costs are reasonable.

This was an original windscreen, and the bonding has over time aged and shrunk. Thankfully, they won't need a new windscreen, but they will need to get it refitted. For many years, we have worked with CCS Windscreens, who are just down the road from us.

Improperly fitted windscreens is one of our top ten reasons for water leaks in cars, both front and back. Rear windscreens can leak too!

Solution: Re-fit windscreen. Decontaminate the car, dry the carpets and use odour-kill to remove bad smells.

Question: "I fixed a leak, but my car is constantly damp and smells like a swamp."

Answer: Cars seldom dry on their own. If you have a economy small hatchback or town car, the carpets might be thin and you can get away with it, but most cars have thick foam carpet underlay. You will need to lift up the carpets or remove them completely to try them. But if your car smells, it's best to treat this while the car is still wet. We use antimicrobial and antifungal to get rid of mould spores, which can make you quite ill. Those damp odours in your car are something you should take seriously... more seriously than the actual leaks.
