Mini Convertible One Sidewalk 2007 | Rain Water Leak (Part 1)

Video transcript

0:00 We're Mini in today for our water leak procedure, 2007, so we're just going to show you what we've found so far. So focusing on this back tailgate rubber at the top here, we can see in places that it's dirty and it's quite flat in places. And same on this side as well. Just to show you on the back tailgate, the back tailgate's nice and dry.

0:21 So now what we're going to do is if we just quickly shut that tailgate, so that's now shut. And what we're going to do is we're just going to pour a bit of water just on the back of the tailgate, just simulating it's raining. So we go all the way across. So obviously that rubber in behind there should divert this water off and then get it to run off out of the side through the bottom.

0:41 So if we just put loads of water on top here, and then what will happen is if we open this boot now. Okay, so we can see here that we've got run marks on top of the tailgate, as well as run marks coming down the rubber, and also here as well. So we can see where it's passing through, and this side as well. So obviously it's slowly getting through on the inside of the rubber, and we can see on the inside of the rubber down the bottom there that we've got water

1:14 on the inside here. So once that then fills up, it will then come over here and then work its way down into the boot area. So that would be the tailgate. And now if we just come over to the passenger door, we're going to focus on this seal here where the window is. And if I just quickly show you, so what this is designed to do is it would run off of this bit here, and some of it would go into here and come out of here, and on the back of the door, when it runs down and passes

1:45 through, we can see there's a little guide here which diverts the water off. But I believe if it's getting too much on here, and then it's overflowing and working its way down. So if we now shut the door, we're gonna put some water just on this seal here. Right, oh, so closely, we can see that there seems to be water running down the inside of the window there.

2:21 It's quite hard to see. And so if we now open this up, we can see that there's a line of water coming down on the inner side of the seal here. And we can see that there's run marks coming down here as well. And but obviously when the doors butted up, it's then collecting here, as we can see here, and then it will then slowly work its way in. And the result of that, if we just lift this carpet up here, it's not majorly wet. But if I just squeeze this bit here, so we can see that there's

2:53 water in the bottom here. And it hasn't travelled to the front, it's only this back piece here, and we've got telltale sign on this bit here. So obviously it's not deflecting it off, and we can see that it's overflowing here. And so that's the two leaks we've found so far. Okay.

On this Mini, we have found two water leaks, (so far), one in the window between door and rear window, and another in the boot.

The window leeks are fairly typical of what we find on convertible cars, as windows are often not held in a frame but are instead waterproofed by being pressed against rubbers. This all depends on the rubbers holding their shape and being plump, flexible and clean. As we can see from what we found in the boot, the rubbers are not good. Over time, the solvents and plasticizers in the rubber evaporate. They can shrink, lose their shape, become stiff and inflexible and of course they can get dirty.

Solution: Usually the rubbers can be brought back with a rubber reviver after they have had a good clean. Rubber reviver can be quite expensive stuff (for a good one that works) but it does actually work and is cheaper than replacing all the rubbers with new ones which is the other option.

Question: "I think I have the same leak on my mini, can I do it myself?

Answer: We won't pretend this is rocket surgery, but like most things, we make it look easy. Once you start to dig down into what's involved, you might find there's a lot more to it than you think, and of course we are well practised. But if you do want to go at it yourself, we have made a video offering advice on everything to do with car water leaks.
