It can either cause a damp watery smell, because obviously the water is sitting underneath the carpet and the underlay, as well as it can cause us electrical problems.

0:25 The reason being is if we look down there, there are the airbag terminals, and we can see they're slightly submerged, or the cable is anyway. Little bit of corrosion in the centre of that plug. And so unfortunately this won't dry unless you take up all the carpet and the underlay, suck it out with a wet vac and then put our super dryer in there to obviously dry the car out. Coming round to the driver's side, the driver's side has got water in it as well, but we haven't got this side lifted up, so we're going to use our little gadget

That does smell quite a lot, doesn't it? I can smell that. I'm going to have to suck that water out, and then I'm going to have to spray that connection point with something. There is much discussion on the internet about the issue of leaky Volkswagen and Audi Group vehicles, with numerous videos on YouTube about how to fix the sunroof pipes or modify the connectors.

However, none of this addresses the real problem, which is the water within the car already.

We post this video clip here to make people aware of just how much water might be under their carpets so it is important to get the carpets out, suck out the water and dry the car thoroughly.

This car also smelt of damp, sour water. So the car was treated to disinfect it and kill mould and bacteria.

We can see that certain electrical systems were located underneath the carpets and were submerged. Obviously, this is not good, and these units can suffer water ingress which destroys them. But don't underestimate the problem with electrics. Water in the car will cause condensation which will form on any cold metal surfaces, which will include all electrical connectors within, submerged or not. With this car, the central locking was already beginning to suffer problems.

We can also see corrosion on the drivers side to a plate. Cars are designed to be rust-proof from the outside-in, not the inside-out, so there is very little protection from water sloshing around in your footwells.

Although we have seen floorpans rusted out and requiring welding, a more immediate problem are seat and seatbelt retention bolts and fixing points becoming weakened by corrosion.

The problem is not fixed until the car is dries and decontaminated.
