What the product names mean

The trade has more names for paint protection than it has kinds of paint protection. Some are chemistry, some are brands, and a good number are marketing words attached to whatever the supplier happened to be selling that year. This section is what each name actually refers to, and more usefully, what each product is for.

Almost everything sold falls into one of three groups, and knowing which group a name belongs to answers most of the question on its own.

Things that cross-link and become part of the surface. A ceramic coating cures into a hard layer chemically bonded to the clear coat; it is the only group that lasts in years rather than weeks. Nano-coating and glass coating are the same thing under different names, and 9H refers to a pencil-hardness scale rather than to any particular product. What mostly varies between them is what has been added to the ceramic base. Titanium dioxide absorbs and scatters UV, and in sunlight it breaks down organic matter sitting on the surface. Silicon carbide adds hardness. Diamond nano-rods are long particles that add strength in the way fibres do in concrete. Graphene coatings are still mostly ceramic, with graphene oxide added. In every case the hardness, the chemical resistance and the water behaviour come from the cross-linked silica backbone; the additive modifies it rather than replacing it. We are not in a position to verify most of the performance claims made for any of them, and we would rather say so than repeat them.

A name on a bottle is not evidence of an ingredient. The same words get used as pure branding with nothing behind them. Diamondbrite has never claimed to contain diamond; Deep Crystal Wax does not claim to contain crystal. So "diamond" or "titanium" on a label tells you what the marketing department chose, not what is in the tin, and the only way to know which you have is to ask what the product actually contains.

Things that sit on top and wear away. Waxes and sealants add a sacrificial layer and remove nothing. Transport Wax is the soft protective film applied to new cars for delivery and is designed to be removed, not kept. Wash'n'Wax, Aqua-Wax and dry wash are all cleaning products with a light protective element; they maintain a finish rather than protect it. Polymer sealants like Supagard sit here too. They are aimed at the same job a ceramic coating does, so they are genuine alternatives in the sense that a buyer is choosing between them; they are simply an older generation of chemistry and not in the same league on durability. The mistake is not treating them as competitors, it is assuming that because they compete they are comparable.

Things that top up what is already there. Quick detailer is the most useful and most misunderstood product in the boot: it lifts fresh bird mess before it etches, it doubles as a clay bar lubricant, and it gives a coated car back its gloss between washes. Show shine and ceramic polish belong in the same group; they refresh appearance and buy time, and none of them is a substitute for the layer underneath.
