A serious installer works indoors, in a clean, well-lit bay with controlled temperature and humidity, not on a driveway or in an open-fronted unit with the wind blowing grit across wet panels. Decent lighting is not a luxury either; you cannot correct paint you cannot see, which is why proper workshops use bright LED or halogen inspection lights to hunt down swirls a domestic garage bulb would never reveal.

If you can, visit before you book. You don't need to be an expert to read a workshop. Is it tidy? Are the cars in progress masked up and clearly mid-process, or just sitting around? Does the person talking to you sound like they enjoy the detail, or like they want you off the phone? The ones who love the work tend to over-explain the preparation, and that's exactly the trait you want.

The questions worth asking

You don't need a long interrogation. Four questions sort the professionals from the opportunists:

  • Is the coating one you're accredited to apply, and does that come with a manufacturer-backed warranty?

A meaningful warranty is registered with the coating manufacturer, names the product and the applicator, and lists clear conditions, usually an annual inspection or maintenance wash. A vague "it'll last years, don't worry" is worth nothing. Coating longevity claims are marketing rather than a guaranteed specification, so the value sits in the written terms, not the headline number of years.

Reading reviews without being fooled

Reviews are useful, but read them like a sceptic. A wall of five-star "great service, lovely chap" comments tells you the customer was happy on the day; it tells you nothing about how the coating looks two winters later. The reviews worth their weight mention specifics: the swirls that were removed, the before-and-after walkaround, how the car beaded through the following year. Look for repeat customers and for photos taken by the customer rather than the workshop. And weigh how a business responds to the occasional critical review, because a calm, factual reply tells you more about the people than the complaint does.
