Audi A4: Matrix Blue Ceramic Coating

The owner saw our Audi A6 video and booked his A4 in the same week. Five years old, kept from new, a scratch on the door that was treated cosmetically rather than a full respray. Four-stage buff, Matrix Blue applied -- and yes, you can put Matrix Blue on a black car.

This Audi A4 owner saw the white A6 ceramic coating video we posted last week and booked his car in immediately. His A4 is five years old, owned from nearly new, and he has decided to keep it. That decision is exactly when a ceramic coating makes sense.

The Scratch

There is a small scratch on the door that happened not long after he bought the car. It has not corroded because it is not quite through to bare metal -- but it is at the tipping point. Left alone, over the next few years it will start to make the car look its age. We did a cosmetic repair to fill it with matched paint rather than a full door respray, which would be the correct but much more expensive route. It will not be invisible, but it will be significantly better and it stops the corrosion clock.

The Polish and Coating

Four-stage buff -- the same process as the A6. Clay first to remove all surface contamination, then four polishing passes to bring the paint back to as good as it has been since the car was new. Then Matrix Blue three-year ceramic coating, including the wheels.

One clarification Gary makes in the video: Matrix Blue does not mean it only goes on blue cars. We apply both Matrix Blue and Matrix Black regardless of the car colour. The names are the product names, not a paint match. A black car with Matrix Blue on it looks exactly as you would expect -- exceptionally shiny. The coating is clear.
