The Self-Cleaning Claim -- Honestly
Ceramic coatings are often described as "self-cleaning." Gary is upfront about what that actually means: it does not clean itself indefinitely. For anyone standing there with arms folded thinking they will never have to wash the car again -- that is not what is happening. What it means is you wash it about half as often. The surface is so smooth and hydrophobic that when it rains, the water picks up the surface dirt as it rolls off. The car gets less dirty, stays cleaner for longer between washes. Half the washing is the realistic figure.
Gary's illustration: normally you might look out the window, see the football is on, and think you will clean the car instead -- it gets dark, you miss both. With a ceramic coating you can watch the football 50 per cent of the time. The fishing stats, he admits, are not his department.
The Resale Evidence
The resale value argument for ceramic coatings is well made, but Gary has his own data. His last six cars all had ceramic coating on them. All six sold within three days of listing. Money in the bank within three days, every time. He is clear this was not just the last two -- it is across a period of several years and six consecutive cars.
When someone is buying a used car on AutoTrader, they are looking at photographs. They want a clean, glossy car in the pictures. They know they will get it dirty -- but they want to buy one that looks right. A coated car that has been maintained looks right. It photographs well, it sells fast.
Should You Coat a New Car
Yes -- there is no better time. The car is already in the best condition it will ever be in.
