A coffee spill in a Mercedes A200 -- and because coffee contains milk, there was a rotting smell developing. The carpet had a waterproof membrane on this car, which fortunately prevented the coffee soaking through to the underlay and foam underneath. A relatively contained job as a result.
We used specialist products designed to break down the fats in milk, combined with antibacterial and antimicrobial agents. The shampoo machines extracted the liquid from the carpet. When you can smell rotten milk, you are smelling the bacteria that are feeding on it -- remove the food source, treat the bacteria, and the smell goes. An air freshener is not a fix; it is a mask over a source that will keep getting worse.
