Ford Focus 2013 | Water Leak Part 1 | Rear Air Vents

Video transcript

0:00 OK, we have a Ford Focus 2013 in today for our water leak procedure. So we've finished the procedure now, so we're just going to show you what we've found. And if we just quickly go to the back here, you can see I've got hose up underneath the bumper there, just simulating that it's raining and it's driving down the road.

0:19 And if we go in here, I've got my twisty camera down in that little hole there. The reason being is because there's an air vent behind that rear bumper. And if we just have a look on the screen here, right, okay, so we can see that there's signs of water coming through that vent, and you can see that the box section's filled up with water as well.

0:41 And so that would be the passenger side, which is obviously letting water through. And I believe it's the same on the other side as well, so we'll just double check that for you. Obviously, and then what's happening is once that's then leaking into the box section, you can see here, it's using that side as a guide, and then it goes down to the back seats.

1:05 And then once it goes to the back seats, it then comes down here, via this pocket underneath the seat. So we can see some mould spores here. If we look in the bottom of the footwell, so we can see how much water's in the bottom of that carpet there. And if we just quickly come down to the front as well, now the front has obviously travelled all the way from the back to the front.

1:29 And then in the front footwell, if we just lift up underneath this underlay. So there we go, so we can see how wet that is as well. And there is an electric cable running down here. So there's quite a lot of water under that carpet there.

Here we are again with another Ford Focus with leaks in those rear air vents behind the bumper, allowing water into the boot and box sections.

The last Focus we showed you was an estate, while this is the standard shape, but they all suffer the same problem and leak in the same places with the water running through the box section and wetting the floors in the front and back.

The air vents have a silicone seal which becomes hard and inflexible with age, dirt starts getting behind it causing the seal to leak.

Solution: These air vents will be replaced, the area cleaned of dirt, ensuring a good seal. Then we will remove the seats, lift the carpets, extract the water and dry the car. The car also has some mould which needs to be dealt with.

Question: "My Ford Focus leaks in exactly the same way. Ford should do a recall and fix this problem".

Answer: We couldn't possibly comment on what Ford should do. But we do know they have slightly changed the design of the air vents, which means replacement parts shouldn't leak in the future.
