Volkswagen Golf GT 2008 | Water Leak found

Video transcript

0:00 Okay, today we have a Golfing 2008, so we're just going to show you what we've found so far. So, it did come in with a wet front footwell, and so as we can see here, we've got some newspaper which is soaking wet. All the underlay as well is wet, not completely soaked, but we can feel that it's damp. The underlay under here, I'll give that a bit of a squeeze, so you can see that it's wet there as well.

0:34 Coming onto the back, we just lift this back carpet up. Okay, so we can see the discolouration in the bottom of the underlay. And once again, this is all damp. So we've got water under there and we've got water in the bottom. We can also see that there's been water underneath the rear seat.

0:55 And if I just quickly show you the rear seat, and the rear seat, if I just put this up a second, and we can see the bottom seat here looks wet. So if I give that a squeeze, we can see that that's full of water there. Coming around to the back, if we just quickly go in here, just turn our light on.

1:18 Right, okay, so we've got an air vent behind here. The only problem is we can see that there's been some form of damage caused to the back of the car, and we can see that this air vent is all split and broke, as well as we can see that the bodywork seems to have all been pushed in, so it's all ripply there.

1:38 So what we're going to do is we're going to pour a bit of water down on this top light, and what that should do is run down the bodywork. And if we just look inside, so we can see that the water's coming through that rear vent. And then what it's then going to do is it's going to fill up this pocket here, and then it's going to follow this guide, and it's going to use this as a slide all the way down. And if we just remove this back towel, so it's

2:02 then working its way down here, as we can see. So this is a pool of water just here. And then what it would eventually do is get to this end weld, and then it'll run down underneath the back seat, as we can see. So that's what we've found so far on that one now.

This particular Golf has a leaking rear vent, which is not unusual on a Golf, as they do tend to leak when they got to a certain age.

However, this car has suffered crash damage, meaning the vent is broken and the hole it fits through is bent out of shape.

Solution: How this problem is addressed is very much up to the customer. It could be that they have only just had this car repaired through an insurance claim, in which case they should go back to the insurance company and inform them, so the car can be repaired properly. It might be the case that they have just bought the car, in which case they might have some recourse with whomever they bought it from. If neither of these is possible, then sending the car to a body shop to straighten out that panel would be a very expensive way to address a leak, but we might be able to beat that panel back into shape and fit a new vent in there. It's unlikely that it would make a good seal, so would require some sealant to make it work. This is hardly ideal, and we do like to repair cars to the standard at which they left the factory, but we do have to bear costs in mind.

Question: "I'm looking for a car water leak detection service near me in London. Do you know anyone or can you come to me?"

Answer: At the time of writing, the only other dedicated leak detection service besides us is in Canada, although most garages do leak detection so if you are determined to find somebody near you, your only problem will be finding a garage which is enthusiastic about doing it. It's difficult and frustrating work and most mechanics would rather be doing something, anything else.

We can't run a mobile service because you need a workshop in order to dismantle the car, and you definitely need an enclosed space for drying.  However, we aren't hard to get to from London, you can drive the car to us down the A12 and get back to London on the train. The station is just a few minutes walk away.
