Rain Water Leak Repairs: BMW 1

This BMW 1 Series came in after the owner found water in the boot near the electrics. She had spotted it the day before and wanted it checked before it went further. The car looked clean on the outside; what was happening inside was a different picture.

James ran the 28-point check. BMW 1 Series have thick underlay -- you cannot reliably feel wetness through the carpet from the top, so he popped the trims and checked underneath. The driver's rear door membrane was leaking heavily when water was poured against the glass, running out of the membrane seal rather than through the door's drain slots at the bottom. When the door closes, that water sits on the rubber threshold and then works its way down into the footwell. The driver's front footwell was soaking wet underneath -- the water had tracked forward from the rear.

The front had a previous repair: someone had put sealant around a cable grommet. That was not leaking, but it told a story. At the back, a pair of small bungs were loose, sitting proud rather than flush, leaving a gap where water could run inside the body. James pressed one in and showed the gap on camera -- not actively leaking under test conditions, but worth noting and sealing.

The key find was the driver's side rear light. James had noticed it was loose -- just a slight wiggle where there should have been none. He put the twist camera up behind into the box section and found water marks on the light locator. On a BMW 1, the rear quarter on the driver's side had evidence of previous bodywork: wax oil inside the panel, black compound on the inner surface where the other side was bare metal. The panel had likely been replaced at some point, and the light seal had not been bedded back in properly when it went back on.

The fix: rear light resealed, the small hoses at the top sealed, the passenger side footwell dried out. Courtesy clean inside and out. No signs of water returning to the pockets on the final check before handover.
