Volkswagen Golf 2014 | Water Leak Detection (Part 1)

Video transcript

0:00 We have a Volkswagen Golf in today, 2014, for our water leak procedure, so let's just quickly show you what we've found so far. So if I concentrate on this back door, the passenger back door, we've got the airbag just separating the seal between the glass. So what we're going to do is we're going to put some water down the back of the glass, which then should simulate a bit draining out the bottom of the door, which it does.

0:23 But under further inspection we can see that it is coming through the door membrane, or possibly the speaker in the corner. So that's the first leak we've found. Then coming over to the drivers rear door, and so we're just going to simulate the same thing again. We've got the airbag down now. So we'll put some water down the window ledge, so it's coming out the bottom of the door, but also it's coming out from the door membrane.

0:54 And then what that's then going to cause, if I just quickly grab my torch, if we come in the back here, we can see that the water's been travelling from the back to the front as well as. So we can see in that seatbelt holder, we've got a load of mould in there, so we have to be careful there.

1:12 We've got a bit of water in this stud here. And if we look down on the footwell here, and I just squashed this here, we can see that that is absolutely soaking wet. Into the back seat, and we can see that there's been signs of water sitting in the back of the seat, and this is wet here. And also on the passenger, you can see that there's a little bit of a blemish of watermark there. And coming to the front, the front's not really waterlogged, and but we can see that is

1:44 damp, and to touch you can see that that's wet there, so we've got wetness in that side there. Then coming round to the boot, the boot area, I've took the inner boot mat out, and but we can see signs of water in there. And these are our next culprits, which are the air vents. So the drivers air vent, we can see that there's signs of leakage on that one now. And if we just look in the passenger one here, passenger one is the same, and we've got a bit of water down in the box

2:18 section there as well, which we're just going to simulate them working. Just quickly coming round to the passenger rear footwell. Passenger footwell, it feels a bit damp, but it doesn't feel as wet as the driver's side, so I believe there's probably only a little bit of oil I've got in the passenger side. See, it just feels a little bit damp, but we've got a lot of mould spores left, right and centre. Right, okay, so we go on to the back testing now and show you the other

2:50 two leaks.

This is a very soggy Golf, with all the usual leaks in all the usual places. There are no real surprises, but this video demonstrates pretty well the amount of water in the car and the mould problems that it can cause.

When I say this car has all the usual problems, I don't mean to be discouraging of Volkswagen, there are a whole list of cars which when they get to a certain age leak through the door membranes and the rear air vents, most of which AREN'T Volkswagen. It's just one of those things; nothing lasts forever and things need to be fixed or replaced. If you are a homeowner you will know that every few years you will get a leaky tap and need to change a washer, that doesn't mean that you bought a poor quality tap.

The water that is on the back seat which James points out isn't from the leaky door membranes, that is coming from the back, but he points it out because you can see that debris has got into that hole. It's probably crisps and biscuits that kids have dropped and fallen down the back of the seat and now that it's damp has gone mouldy.

Your car is obviously not airtight, (or water tight) but it is a confined space, so to have mould growing in there is a really serious health problem that most of us underestimate.

Solution: We will replace these door membranes, probably on all four doors. The rear air vents will be replaced with new ones. There's more about the rear air vents in part two of this video.

Question: "I want to get my car to you.... do you know a good transporter company?"

Answer: Yes, we do and can arrange transportation, just give us a call.
