Honda Civic 1991 | water leak

Video transcript

0:00 Today we have a Honda Civic 1991, so a bit of an older model in today. The customer had a rear drivers footwell wet, so let's just go in and show you what we found. Okay, so we've got obviously a patch of water there. It looks quite strange because there's no signs of it coming down anywhere.

0:22 But obviously what we was doing is we were testing this window here. And what that has shown us is if I can just get you in this little section here. So obviously we've pulled the back trim out, and if I just put you down here, we're looking at this blue clip. And what I'm going to do is I'm just going to put some water on the outside of the car.

0:45 There we go. So we've got a heavy leak on that back clip, and then what that's then doing is it's filling up the box section down here. And then what it's slowly doing is working its way underneath box section where the rear seat sits, and then it's slowly working its way out this way. And then the result of that is obviously we've got water under there in the underlay. So this is the culprit, so it's a case of obviously taking it off, cleaning that up and resealing. And so it's just obviously

1:21 a trim which is causing that problem. And so there we go, a nice little sneaky one on an older model.

A leak on an older model of Civic. Water is getting in where the side trim panel clips through a hole in the body work.

From there, the water trickles down inside the body panel to a sealed box section under the back seat, then slowly leaks out into the foot well on the driver's side. There is quite a puddle under the carpet.

Solution: We will seal this hole, decontaminate and dry the car.

Question: "Is it going to be worth repairing the leaks in an older car?"

Answer: Sometimes older cars, which are cheap to run, reliable, small and easy to use city cars, may not have much monetary value but would be hard to replace. It might be worth doing if  it means you are likely to get many more years use out of the car. Likewise, we have done some cars which have sentimental value.

We have had other customers who have decided their best course of action is to trade their car in and get a new one. Much of this depends on what the inspection shows. Some cars like this Honda (still a desirable car even though it's 30 years old) are a simple and cheap fix, while other's might have crash damage which has lead to multiple leaks through body panels which need welding.

Having the inspection done allows you to make an informed decision.
